2020 CCA Professionalism Seminar: It’s a Jungle Out There - Managing Risks in Your Professional Life March 29, 2020 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Life is fraught with risks. As actuaries, we have to manage the risks associated with a variety of activities in our professional lives. The way in which we address and handle these situations says a lot about us as professionals, to clients, other actuaries, and third parties with an interest in our work. And make no mistake about it: reputations and even careers may be on the line if you get it wrong.

This seminar focuses on some professional dilemmas that actuaries face as they try to manage competing risks. Most of the situations at which we’ll look are based on real life events. Join the debate as our presenters discuss the pros and cons of different ways to handle them. Issues to be addressed include:

  • Where’s “the line,”, and what do you do when a client asks you to cross it?
  • What happens when commercial and professional considerations are at odds with one another?
  • “No” isn’t a popular response to clients’ requests. How should the message be framed?
  • How can independence - in both fact and appearance - be maintained?
  • How should the appearance of a lack of independence be handled?
  • How can differences of professional opinion with other providers be addressed without causing clients’ eyes to glaze over?

This year’s Professionalism Seminar promises to be informative and entertaining.
