Index Actuarial Foundation Update The Actuarial Foundation and Scholastic Launch New Math Program To Teach Kids about Math in the Real World- Kids Learn to Use Graphing Skills to Explore Recycling - The Actuarial Foundation and Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, have launched Expect the Unexpected with Math: Bars, Lines, & Pies. This exciting, free supplemental math program for elementary and middle school teachers is being distributed nationwide and is designed to build students’ math skills while helping them understand how actuaries use and apply math everyday to real-world situations. The Expect the Unexpected with Math: Bars, Lines, & Pies program features lessons and activities that build students’ skills by teaching them how to create, apply, and analyze pie charts, bar graphs, and line graphs—all fundamental math tools used by actuaries throughout their work. The materials include a poster/teaching guide as well as a class set of family take-home pages, and features activity titles such as “Recycling by the Numbers: It’s as Easy as Pie” and “Tap the Math Facts Behind Bottled Water.” Actuaries are invited to download a copy and present it to a classroom or school in their area! These are the benefits we see: (You may find more!) 1. Educate students about the impact of math upon the
economy and our daily lives. A downloadable copy of the Bars, Lines, & Pies is available by visiting the Foundation’s Web site at: www.actuarialfoundation.org/grant/index.html To contact the Foundation about this program and other Foundation programs email asa@actfnd.org.
